I share the same sentiments expressed below, I had the honor and privilege to be his student at Muslim High School.Wow what a lost.

The nation of Gambia has lost an icon, a pioneer and a master of the English language. In class annoyed by our improper use of the English language, he will jokingly say" I don't blame you guys, I blame your unqualified principal" and we will all burst out laughing. His command of the English language wowed everyone who came in contact with him.
The game of scrabble will greatly miss him, Musa your students will forever be indebted to you, you will for sure be greatly missed.

May Allah the Almighty bless your soul and may your soul rest in perfect peace.

Until we meet again, keep hope and faith alive.

Your Student,

Ousman Conteh
Class of 97

Subject: Gambian Educator Musa Sey Passes Away

 BY EBRIMA G. SANKAREH, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
The sudden and shocking death has been announced of Musa Amadou Sey, veteran
ambian educator and public administrator. Musa Sey or Bala as he was
ffectionately called, died today (Monday December, 17th.2007) and was laid to
est this evening at his native Basse. For the past year Bala was battling a
ickness that saw him hospitalized at the Royal Victoria Hospital Sanatorium
locally called Wencho) for a few months. He recovered and was discharged,
eturned to Basse where he peacefully passed away.
Born in cosmopolitan Basse in the late 1940s, Musa attended the
illage primary school in colonial Gambia from where he proceeded to Armitage
igh School in George Town in the McCarthy Island Division. At armitage Musa was
trailblazer noted for his charisma, camaraderie and captivating brilliance
hat endeared him to both staff and students. He exhibited a keen application to
cademics and was noted for his quick wit and marvelous grasp of the English
anguage recalls his good friend and brother, Miami University Political Science
rofessor Dr. Abdoulaye Saine. In debates, seminars and symposia, Bala brought
he best out of his sharp intellect and left Armitage High ever grateful for the
esounding sense of success. Musa Bala was a debater per excellence; one of the
ost brilliant Gambians I know remarks a devastated soft-spoken Professor Saine.
When Musa wrote the School Certificate Examinations in the early,
960s, he climaxed to the Yundum Teachers’ College and after a year, he
roceeded to the Sixth Form at The Gambia High School, the only class in the
ntire nation. From The Gambia high school he was destined for greater academic
eights and so he matriculated to the prestigious Ile Ife University in the
ederal Republic of Nigeria under the tutelage of Professor Wole Soyinka who
ould later receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. He read Linguistics and
nglish Language graduating with highest honours returning home with the golden
leece; a very unpretentious being yet one with a penchant for intellectual
iscourse. In the gallery of Gambian intellectuals, Musa Sey will be remembered
s a very fine mind, a peculiar creed, a towering personality, an intimidating
isposition with little patience for stupidity especially, with those who spoke
nd wrote wrong English.
The last time I saw him in 1995, he had as always, a copy of the latest
dition of Readers’ Digest.
He was the premiere Administrative Officer at the African Center
or Democracy & Human Rights Studies and had worked at various others offices
nd establishments that almost all knew him. Musa Sey taught English Language at
he Gambia College, and at almost all the premiere high schools in the
ountry-Saint Augustine’s, Gambia High, Muslim High and Armitage. In 1992, he
riefly served as Editor of The Gambia Daily Observer. He once served as Deputy
ivisional Commissioner under the late NIA Chief Daba Marena at his native
asse. Two loving daughters, Yaya Sey, 17 and Yawureh Sey, 13 survive Musa Sey.
ay the Almighty God grant Musa Sey’s gentle, loving and caring soul eternal
eace in Heaven. Given the larger than large life Musa Sey lived, and his great
ontributions towards Gambian education, I would borrow these immortal lines for
is tombstone: “Tanto nomini nullum par eloguim”

The above article was culled from the Gambia Echo on-line newspaper
Musa Sey was one of the most dedicated educationists that there ever would be
n our nation. He loved imparting knowledge to others with a sense of humour and
un. He was a strict diplinarian at Armitage and a great source of assurance to
ll students.

May his soul dwell forever in the gardens of jannah. Amen!
