Mr. Owens,

Really good news indeed. Yet the fact that Dumo and five other detainees remained incarcerated for three wicked years inspite of the weakness of the case against them is reason enough for apprehension.

On the other hand, if there was once a moment at which we needed to keep the heat of campaign for their immediate release, it is now. The legal battle may soon be over but the political fight that generated it remains. All over the place, their is growing international reaction to those dictators who show little concern for the lives and liberties of their citizens. One only has to recall the unprecedented address delivered by President Chirac to African leaders during the last Franco-African summit a few months ago.

We ourselves must seize the momentum raised by such international concern for the fate of Africans to inject sanity and human decency into the minds of those under whose misrule we continue to spend unimaginably horrible periods in prison and die violently by bullets and soldiers our tax money pays for.

Momodou S Sidibeh
