Gambia-L:

The e-mail below has come from one of my sources in Banjul. It is for Latirr
Downes-Thomas.

Ebrima,

This message is for Latirr Downes-Thomas:

Latirr, you have assigned yourself, and those volunteers, a gigantic task of
listing the number of young, bright and mostly hard working Gambians that
Yahya Jammeh has dismissed over the last six years. You may need more than
the encouragement from Katim Touray (who means well) and the other guys on
the L. Your team must include some human resource experts, a computer wizard
of the likes of Yusupha Jow; a psycho-analyst (if there is one in the
house); a good economist like Mr. Basil Jones; a tracker (someone who is
good at keeping tabs of the ins and outs of civil servants); and a historian
who specialises in the Gambian Civil Service.

Listing the names of those fired since the butcher came to power will not
tell the entire story. Your final list will be only an approximation at best
despite your expert team. Now, get the level of education of all of them,
multiply it by an average of $10,000 US dollars per year for the number of
years they've spent, say, at Universities in Ohio State, UCLA, Manchester,
New Hampshire, Birmingham, Kiev, Patrice Lumumba, Brandies, Howard, Oxford,
American U etc. Now, add the number of years of service in the civil service
each has logged in, add the cost of training while in the civil service
(short courses, in service training, attachments etc,). This is an
over-simplification of the problem by any streach of the imagination just to
make your task simpler. Now, Latirr, get Yus to feed this into his wireless
key board after having a nice game of soccer; please, Yus, no "fighting"
because you are going to have the shock of your life once those many years,
$$$$$, number of dependents without a bread winner in the house start
spewing from your lap top. Then let Hamjatta and Saul Khan put it into words
for you. Latirr, I know you are as smart as your Dad (here, I am assuming
Felix, if not, please excuse me) but the language that Hamjatta and Saul
will use will be more biting than yours or anyone on the list. Once the
report is finalised, send a copy to every Gambian. They will run Yahya
Jammeh out of Kanilai and into Banjul without a shot being fired, once they
realise the amount of damage done to our human resources by Yahya
If there is any single thing, apart from killing innocent kids and
slaughtering tens of other innocent Gambians, it is the huge number of
civil servants that this moron has dismissed. It has set us back,
at least, a generation.

A quizz : Which Gambian Civil Servant holds the dismissal record?
