Education and society Written by DO Wednesday, 30 November 2005 We at the Observer Company are overwhelmed by the generosity shown to us by the students of the University of The Gambia for taking their precious time to clean up our premises during the last “Operation Clean the Nation”.
This is a clear manifestation that the education of our youth is gaining momentum in the social fabric of the society.

For that matter, we note with pride that our institutions of learning are a force to be reckoned with, from the whole caboodle of educational circle.

It is for this reason that we have decided to reflect on the importance of education in the socio-economic development of a nation.

Foremost, the training of the human mind is incomplete without knowledge and education, which in no small measure, moulds the human conscience and shapes it towards becoming a right thinker.

Secondly, the attainment of education enables people to receive information from the external world, acquaint themselves with the past and receive necessary information regarding the present. Without education, one is confined to a closed room, but with it one finds oneself in a room with windows open towards the outside world.

In addition, one of the great scriptures has it that the pen of a scholar is more precious than the blood of a martyr, in that a martyr is engaged in defence, while a scholar builds individuals and nations along the positive lines towards development.

While we cannot elaborate on all the essential points, we are confident that it is in the light of the above that the students of the University of The Gambia took it upon themselves to clean up our offices during the last national cleansing exercise. So, they really deserve a pat on the back as future leaders of the society.

We, therefore, urge students to take up the challenge and contribute their quota towards national development by exploiting all legitimate avenues to become true ambassadors of the country in all domains of life.
