Hi folks,

FYI.

And while you are at it, check out the CSIR site (http://www.csir.co.za), and the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa (http://www.nrf.ac.za). Some of you might have heard the NRF President Dr. Khotso Mokhele on the BBC Tues. night (US Central Time) talking about South African science policy. He was also here Madison, Wisconsin a few weeks ago in regards the Hartesbeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (http://www.nrf.ac.za/facilities/hartrao/) which is being built in partnership with the Univ. of Wisconsin. All in all,
they're making some really impressive strides.

Katim

> STRENGTHENING AFRICAN FOOD PROCESSING PROJECT (SAFPP)
>
> CALL FOR PROPOSAL: EXPLORATORY STUDY - WEST AFRICAN TRADITIONAL JUICES AND EXCESS TROPICAL FRUIT MARKET STUDY
>
> 1. BACKGROUND
>
> Traditional fruit juices and juice syrups are produced in Senegal from fruit such as Bissap, Madd, Samone and Tamirand. (It is noted that the Tamirand, Bissap and Ginger are not actually juices, but the term "fruit juice" is used for convenience). The syrups are currently produced and sold at the cottage level. SAFPP believes that these juices offer an opportunity for small processing enterprises to develop sophisticated quality products for sale in formal retail enterprises in Senegal as well as regional and international export markets.
>
> SAFPP will be running a retailer / supplier / manufacturer / backer workshop in Senegal in the fourth quarter of 2000 with the objective of identifying the potential for entrepreneurs to enter the market with these traditional fruit juices.
>
> This is based on a belief that the American and European Food markets are showing a strong trend towards health, variety and experimentation in their consumption. This therefore represents a large and secure market that along with the local and regional convenience and quality market form the base for an industry.
>
> To be able to run this workshop successfully SAFPP requires information on the indigenous fruits and traditional juices of West Africa, their utilisation, potential and outlook. To initiate this SAFPP will fund an Exploratory Study based mainly of the collation of existing studies and information.
>
> Additionally, SAFPP has identified and discussed, through list serves, the fact that regional and seasonal gluts in the production of fruit and vegetables often result in very low seasonal costs and even total loss of produce. The utilisation of this wasted resource would improve the status of the farmer.
>
> In carrying out this study the consultant will be making contact with organisations who are likely to have information on tropical fruit and excesses and will collect whatever is possible for analysis outside this study.
> 2. REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL
>
> SAFPP therefore requests proposals from appropriately qualified and experienced consultants to carry out an exploratory study of the traditional fruit industry and to collate available related information on tropical fruit.
>
> 3. OBJECTIVES OF THE MARKET STUDY
>
> Traditional juice - to collect, analyse, present and publish information on the current production and sales, potential market demand and possible contacts to support the SAFPP project to "commercialise" traditional fruit juice products.
>
> Tropical Fruit - where sources of information overlap, to collate and present information on mangos, bananas and pineapple in West Africa.
>
> 4. TASKS OF THE STUDY
>
> The following tasks are identified as the minimum required to reach the study objectives, but should be supplemented with other tasks identified during the execution of the study.
>
> Traditional Juices
>
> To describe the existing utilisation of traditional juices and to identify those organisations already operating in the regional and international markets
>
> To identify existing information that defines the traditional fruit products, their availability, their cost and prospects.
>
> To identify existing markets for these products locally, regionally and internationally.
>
> To collect information from Food Companies, Research Organisations, Trade Journals, Consumer Organisations and Retailers on their views on the potential markets for traditional juices
>
> To identify 5 commercial organisations (along with their contact details) who express an interest in being involved in the development of this market.
>
> Tropical Fruit Excesses
>
> Collect, analyse and report on studies that have identified the level of tropical fruit production and loss, projects that have focussed on the excess and organisations keen to establish new projects.
>
> 5. SCOPE & SOURCES OF INFORMATION
>
> The scope is defined by the intention to mainly base the study on information from earlier studies, organisations and on the information collected by organisations. This also makes it important that the organisations approached cover the range of those with suitable information.
>
> The study will be operated out of a Senegal and will source information generated by previous studies from International (especially those with Senegalese presences) and Senegalese organisations. Its contacts with entrepreneurs, growers and producers will be limited to Senegal.
>
> A list of organisations that will be approached in the study is attached as Appendix 2. This list needs to be supplemented in the proposal process and during the execution of the study.
>
> 6. MECHANISM
>
> It is the aim of this contract to be run in an interactive manner so that it can be directed and adjusted in response to the information collected.
>
> The consultant will communicate with SAFPP using INTERNET based information systems on a biweekly basis so that the progress and scope of the study can be adjusted if necessary.
>
> 7. OUTPUT
>
> The final output of the project will be a report that will be published on the SAFPP site, in an access-controlled page by SAFPP.
>
> 8. ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES
>
> It is expected that the information collection and analysis take in the order of 20 man days to complete and that most of the work will be of a desktop nature using regional organisations. The contact with buyers will need to be telecommunications based, as there are insufficient funds for extensive regional and international travel.
>
> The results of this study will guide SAFPP in the need for further more comprehensive studies.
>
> APPENDIX 1
