Pateh,
I earnestly agree with you. As the saying goes " in the Gambia even if one
says something in a house without doors and windows, it finds its way out".
Corruption has eaten the fabric of our society so much that people dont
worry any more about "ill-gotten gains". It is a shame to see some of us
praising persons who have put their long fingers into public coffers and
made away with the poor tax payers money.
Once upon a time in the Gambia, some parents would not allow you to marry
their daughter unless they know that you are an employee of certain
departments or parastatals. And it happends that these are the work places
at which employees by virtue of their nature of work, are abled to access
money besides their rightful monthly earnings and allowances. As a nation,
we must build a culture of truthfulness and honesty and at all times
disassociating ourselves from criminal and immoral acts. We must distinquish
between the good and evil so as to reinforce the former and do our best to
discourage the latter. Our inability in both the past and present to
effectively discriminate between the good and evil has cost us dearly, and
unless we are abled as a nation to make a determined efford against
corruption, our development effords will continue to be undermined ,
notwithstanding which party you have in power. I am at pains to say this,
but I am convinced that this loud, lousy and greedy bunch of politicians we
have in our country is without doubt a product of our own inability to
promote good and stamp out evil.
Folks, lets be serious, if anyone of us becomes a millionaire over night,
sure we all will know if the person got the money legally or merits it.
Omar Joof.
