AFRICA JOURNAL PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
Now live and on-demand:
www.ibb.gov/worldnet/afjournl.html

NEXT ON AFRICA JOURNAL: "Conquering Illiteracy"
Broadcast Date/Time: Thursday, March 30, 2000 1-2 PM; 1800-1900 UTC.

It's been ten years since world leaders last met at "The World
Conference on Education for All" to discuss ways to expand and improve
basic education needs for children, youth and adults. Next month, the
international community will gather in Dakar, Senegal to look at the
progress made toward a literate and educated world. Where does Africa
stand in the fight to conquer illiteracy? While socio-economic problems
in sub-Saharan Africa present great challenges to education, there are
encouraging signs that the continent is showing significant growth in
early childhood enrollments and reducing adult illiteracy. On the
next Africa Journal, we'll talk about efforts to conquer illiteracy.

Program Guests:
*Aicha Bah Diallo, Director, Basic Education, UNESCO
*Rosemary Bellew, Office of Human Development, Africa Division, World
Bank
*Philip Twyford, Director, International Office, Oxfam International
*Ronald Musoke, Co-Founder, Ugandan Literacy Project

Africa Journal is broadcast LIVE - every Thursday at 1800 UTC on
WORLDNET Presents. WORLDNET is the satellite television service of the
International Bureau of Broadcasting. Africa Journal is a weekly live
public affairs/viewer call-in television series giving African
journalists and audiences direct access to news and opinion makers. Past
program participants include Nigerian President-Elect Obasanjo, Former
U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Special Envoy to Africa Jesse Jackson, and
"Amistad" producer/actress Debbie Allen.

We encourage African television and radio stations to broadcast Africa
Journal live to your viewers. We encourage reporters and viewers to
call in with questions too.
