KANO, Nigeria, Jan 25 - Senegal scored early but then had to fight a
second-half rearguard action to hold out for a 3-1 win over Burkina Faso in
Tuesday's African Nations Cup group C match.
Winger Henri Camara set Senegal on their way to the win in their opening
match with a goal after just three minutes, converting a square pass from
Ousmane Diop to catch the Burkinabe early on. A brilliant long-range
free-kick from Pape Sarr in injury time at the end of the first half
extended the lead for Senegal, making their first appearance in the finals
for six years.
But Burkina Faso, who finished fourth at the last edition of the Nations Cup
finals, staged a strong recovery after half-time, first having a shot
cleared off the line by Senegal's defence and then pulling a goal back in
the 65th minute.
Dutch-based teenager Ousmane Sanou placed the ball perfectly after a cross
knocked back from the by-line. Relentless attacking saw Burkina Faso come
close to an equaliser but four minutes from time a wicked deflection from
Salif Keita's shot ensured a third goal for Senegal.
Senegal now top group C with defending champions Egypt, who beat Zambia 2-0
on Sunday. Senegal meet Egypt in the next game in the group on Friday
