Subject: Re: GPU Press Release On The Closure of SUD FM Radio

There is absolutely no good reason to be found for the APRC governmment's closure of Sud FM radio. If the radio has made statements that can potentially cause a breach of national security, that are potentially libelous, that are not true, that can incite a riot or any other form of civil disturbance, well, the law should be allowed to take its course. The government should insititute legal proceedings against the radio station, but the station should not be arbitrarily closed. That smacks of utter disregard and an unforgiveable act of gross impunity on the part of the government. It is further testimnoy to the tragic reality in our country today - that what we have is the RULE OF MEN and not the RULE OF LAW.

This is another insult to the intelligence, intergrity and sovereignty of the Gambian people. It is high time that Gambians do something to let Jammeh and his cronies know that all citizens have the same rights, freedoms and responsibilities. He must be made to stop abusing the people with impunity. We join the Gambia Press Union and the media fraternity worldwide to condemn this gross insult on the Gambian people and their media institutions. We say to Jammeh : STOP BEING A BULLY!! IT IS SHAMEFUL!!

Baba Galleh Jallow

        >RE: Another Private Radio Station Closed
        >
        >At the time of going to the press it has been brought to the attention of
        >the GPU that Sud FM Radio Station Gambia Ltd, situated in Banjul has been
        >closed. The closure happened on Saturday October 22, 2005 at about 3 pm
        >when five police officers entered the premises of the station and
        >requested that the Station Manager - Mr Pape Diomaye Thiare close it down.
        >Mr. Thiare asked the officers why they were to do so and they replied that
        >they had been instructed to do so and that they were not in a position to
        >disclose the name of the authority that instructed them to act.
        >
        >Before closure of the station and in the light of the issues that
        >transpired between the two parties, Mr Thiare went on air and informed the
        >Sud FM listeners that they had been asked by the "authorities" to close
        >down the radio station. This was done by Mr. Thiare and his staff without
        >any fuss and with due regard for the circumstances under which compliance
        >was sought.
        >
        >The GPU has yet established the reasons that led to closure and is trying
        >to do so. However the GPU wishes to register its concern over the closure
        >of the station notably as the station workforce comprises of 75% Gambians
        >and 25% Senegalese. Sud FM radio station has its origins in Senegal but
        >the Gambia subsidiary has Gambian shareholders.
        >
        >The GPU is therefore concerned that the reasons for closure be made known
        >as soon as possible. In this respect the GPU awaits a press release or
        >statement from the authorities to clarify the reasons as to closure of
        >the station. We hope such recourse will prevent a negative image of the
        >country being portrayed and open up a process of negotiation to bring back
        >Sud FM on air for the benefit of its listeners.
        >
        >END OF GPU PRESS RELEASE.
        >
        >The Gambia Press Union is waiting for an official explanation from the
        >Government before making any proper reaction to the closure of the radio.
        >
        >Before the above statement was issued, the Gambia Press Union had what it
        >call an emergency crisis meeting at its head offices in Serekunda. At this
        >meeting it was disclosed that the closure may also have something to do
        >with the programme content of the radio. Some of the views expressed at
        >the meeting is that this must have been a deal between Abdoulie Wade
        >President of Senegal and Yahya Jammeh of the Gambia. Whether true or not
        >that is what some people believe. The end of Jammeh's visit to Dakar and
        >the closure cannot be a mere coincidence.
        >
        >However the manager of the radio said they are 90% developmental. He said
        >since the coming into air in 1997, the radio have not taken up a D1000 to
        >Senegal. All they do is to spend on the radio by the parent body in Dakar.
        >This he said is show that the radio is actually not out here in Banjul to
        >make money, but rather to help in development.
        >
        >Mr. Thiare said at the meeting that the radio has so many free civic
        >education programmes. The police have one and there is a lot of other
        >programmes for health and among others, all geared towards development.
        >He said in Senegal they charge about D300 per advertisement while in the
        >Gambia it is only D75.
        >
        >Yesterday the 23 October 2005, the Secretary of State for Trade and
        >Employment Mrs. Neneh Macdonall Gaye who also is overseeing the ministry
        >of Information said in an interview with BBC that the station is closed
        >due some statements made over the radio immediately after the talks were
        >over between the two presidents. In her view those statements were
        >inciteful and can affect or sever the relations between Senegal and the
        >Gambia.
        >
        >The Gambia Press Union will meet later to closely look at the reasons
        >given by the minister.
