Customs make record collection
By Sheriff Bojang
Jan 5, 2004, 14:50

The Customs & Excise department has made a record collection, in excess of
D100 million, for the month of December 2003. This figure represents an
increase of about 15 per cent over December 2002 and about 55 per cent over
December 2000.

Daily Observer has reliably learnt that since the appointment of Mr Momodou
Kabba Tambajang as the acting director-general of the department three
months ago, monthly collection has been upped by between 15 to 23 per cent
as compared to the corresponding monthly collection figures for last year.

The annual collections for the years 2000 and 2001 were about D598,700,000
and the 2003 figure is expected to almost double this.
Neither the director-general nor the newly-appointed adviser to the
department, Ebrima Touray, were available for immediate comment on what has
been spurring on the department to make the record high collections.
However, a trade analyst and a customs’ watcher, said the control
mechanisms, discipline and re-assignment of staff carried out by Mr
Tambajang since his appointment has been catalytic in the record
collections.

“Again, the the flow of international trade is being normalised and as you
know, this is the peak period of trade activity in the country,” he
explained.
Customs & Excise is one of the major revenue sources of the government
under the supervision of the department of state for Finance and Economic
Affairs. Although the department is operational throughout the country with
six border posts, its activities are centred at the Banjul sea and
airports.
