 CULLED FROM THE POINT
Over 300 APRC Supporters Defect to UDP/NRP Alliance
Thursday 31st August 2006

By Madi Njie

Over 300 youths and women, who claimed to be APRC supporters, last Sunday defected to the UDP/NRP alliance during a UDP/NRP alliance mass political rally held in Bakau Sanchaba.

Tamsir Kujabi, who led a group of youths assembled at the rally, said his group comprised over a hundred APRC supporters from various parts in Bakau.

He said they are joining the UDP/NRP alliance because they envisage a prosperous Gambia that would be economically viable, developed, peaceful and secure, with respect to human rights and freedom of the press.

Mam Boye Jeng, who also claimed to lead a group of 137 women from Tallinding, publicly renounced his support for the APRC and switched allegiance to the UDP/NRP coalition.

Yahya Jamba, a one-time Ward candidate of the APRC in Lower Fulladu West, together with over a hundred of his purported followers, also defected to the UDP/NRP alliance. "I resigned from the APRC as a Ward Council candidate in Lower Fulladu so as to give chance to the NRP who are now having their candidate as the Ward Councillor in that constituency," Mr Jamba declared.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, UDP/NRP flagbearer, in his speech, welcomed all the defectors to his party and called on all to join the UDP to get rid of the Jammeh regime.
