I do not wish to enter into this Jaranka-Niuminka debate but a little

history of Niumi.

In 1826 Masa Brunnay Sonko, King of Barra entered into a treaty with the

British Governor Macauley in which he handed over Cede Mile (the stretch

of land one mile wide from Yadoo Creek (north of Barra) to Jokadu Creek.

Essentially this is the stretch of land along the river. In return the

King received an annual stipend that included "Ships of all nations, on

entering the Gambia, were wont to salute the King of Barra, who owned

the mouth of the river, and to pay a toll of ONE BAR OF IRON" (emphasis

mine).

Perhaps of the source of iron for the legendary Jaraka daggers :-X .
