EDITORIAL:WHY IS THE JAMMEH GOV'T MUTE OVER THE ALLEGED EXECUTION OF THE COUP SUSPECTS?
      EDITORIAL
It is barley 24 hours, since the alleged disappearance of the five coup suspects, which confirmed well founded fear within and outside the West African country, that the men must have been summarily executed by the Jammeh government. The Gambian government remained mute over the alleged killing of the detainees, who served key positions in Jammeh’s government at some point. The culture of killing is becoming rampant in our dear mother land and it is time for the International community to call for restrain in this ugly state of affairs befalling our country.

The five men feared dead were identified as Daba marenah, former NIA boss, Lieutenant Alieu Ceesay, Alpha Bah, Sergeant Malafi Corr and Lieutenant Ebou Lowe. These men we gathered, were on handcuff throughout their detention and it beats the imagination of any rationale Gambian to buy the government cover up story that the men escaped after the vehicle they were traveling with somersaulted.
The Freedom Newspaper, made repeated enquiries in CRD and the Community there said they were not aware of any accident as claimed by the government. Perhaps, the accident was man made and not real accident as implied by this murderous regime. We are born and raised in CRD and for this government to bandit around in our own locality in the name of an accident will not go unchallenged.
We have been in touch with the Jangjangbureh main Prison, the Commissioner’s office and the local health centers around that locality and interestingly none of these people interviewed by the Freedom Newspaper, could confirmed the government accident story. We need facts and not empty statements without substance.
Unless the government produces the bodies of the above mentioned former public servants, nothing can make us believe that these people escaped. It is imperative to note that throughout the so called confession speeches of the coup suspects on National Television, Daba Marenah, Lowe and others never appeared on TV. It is reported that these people were brutally tortured and have little chances of surviving.
What is more honorable than this government to speak the truth rather than lying in broad daylight. We know that Yahya and his NIA are regular readers of the Freedom Newspaper. If our story on the alleged execution of these detainees was false, they would have rushed with a counter statement.
The Daily Observer or the Retrogressive Africans online paper would have come up with a story to rebuff our piece. But there was nothing like that. Silence means guilt. The detainees reserved the right to live. The media trial spearheaded by the state was geared towards preempting the judicial process.
To avoid the international community picking on him for mistreating the detainees, Jammeh thought that the best way to black mail the people was to come up with a disappearance story. Well, the truth will prevail one day. We have seen past atrocities committed by his other dictator brothers being probed today. Jammeh, should be mindful about his actions and be God fearing. The evils he is perpetuating today will no doubt haunt him sooner or later.
By this editorial, we are appealing to the United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Right Watch and other human rights organizations to send a fact finding mission to The Gambia to probe into the alleged execution of these coup suspects. The Gambia is on the verge of witnessing a full blown war, in view of the government’s mistreatment of its citizens.
We should bear in mind that an oppressed society can resort to anything if the situation remains unbearable. Therefore, the UN and other human rights organizations should talk to Jammeh before he will finally set our country ablaze.
The African Union should also consider relocating the AU summit scheduled to take place in Banjul. There is growing insecurity in The Gambia. The Summit should not be held under such a fragile security situation. We love The Gambia more than Yahya Jammeh and we have nothing to gain by calling for the said Summit to be relocated.
Our call is based on National interest and in the sprit of democracy and good governance. Countries with appalling human rights credentials like The Gambia are not qualified to host such important Summits. The AU will do justice to the people of the continent, if it reconsiders this popular call for the Banjul summit to be relocated. Our country is far from stable.
On a final note, we call on the families of the alleged executed detainees to continue to put their faith in God. Justice will come to the door steps of the perpetrators of this heinous crime sooner or later. We are still not convinced that Daba Marenah and Co escaped from custody. We challenge Jammeh and the IGP to bring evidence to end these speculations. The culture of killing should end. Our people deserved to live no matter what. We rest our case.
