Weah's Alleged 'job pledge' to Grand Gedeans Sparks Fears in Nimba
Source: FrontPageAfrica.com

October 20, 2005
Monrovia, Oct. 20-Citizens of Nimba County say they are concern over
reports that the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) of presidential
candidate George Weah has promised to give two top positions at the
Ministry of Defense to Grand Gedeans if elected to the presidency, thereby
sidelining them.

The Nimba citizens, during a consultative meeting in Paynesville Tuesday,
set up a committee to meet with the two presidential candidates, George
Weah and Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf as well as discuss the county’s interests
after the run-off elections.

The nine-man committee is headed by the leader of the defunct Independent
National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL) and Nimba County senior
Senator-elect, Prince Y. Johnson. It will include other prominent county
opinion leaders.

The move follows reports that the CDC presidential candidate had
“allegedly” promised to sideline Nimbians and give two top defense posts
(Chief of Staff and the Defense Minister portfolios) to Grand Gedeans if
elected, something which some Nimbians see as a threat.

Reports say the statement was “allegedly” made during Mr. Weah’s campaign
trail in Grand Gedeh saying that he would wipe tears from the faces of
Grand Gedeans if he ascends to the presidency. Monrovia, Oct. 20-The
Liberty Party (LP) of Cllr. Charles Brumskine says despite its
reservations that the elections were marred by irregularities it remains
resolute to the process of democracy in Liberia.
Liberia: Analysis- Politics Getting Dirty as Run-Off Looms
Oct. 19-George Weah a homosexual? Weah a warring faction supporter and a
traditional chief? Ellen a killer? Ellen involved in Jackson Doe’s Death?
Fact or fiction, truth or dare, it seems the rule of law doesn’t apply
when it comes to the quest for power in the post-war Liberia.

A list of sixty plus candidates dwindled to twenty-two has now ended with
a match-up of the Harvard-trained economist and retired veteran
footballer. CDC’s George Weah versus UP’s Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the dream
match pitting the so-called educated against the un-educated, the elite
Congo against the indigenous.

In the last few weeks a lot of stories have emerged, some true, some
questionable and others? Well, let’s just say hard to believe, but they
have the ability to revive old wounds and plunge an already sinking
Liberia into another round of warfare.

Liberty Party still Resolute to Democratic Process; Yet to File Formal
Complaint to NEC

In a statement read by its spokesman Emmanuel Muyenneh Wednesday, he said,
“Amidst the many inquiries in the prevailing circumstances unfolding in
the country, Liberty Party wants to assure its supporters, partisans and
all democratic minded Liberians that Liberty Party is firmly standing on
the word of God.

“With regards to the future of our country and the Liberian presidency,
Liberty Party remains resolute and committed to the process of democracy
in Liberia, the LP spokesman said.

The party said it takes courage in the fact that the word of God will
prevail in spite of the figures and statistics from the NEC. “We want all
to know that in spite of the figures and statistics from the national
Elections Commission, Liberty takes courage in the fact that the word of
God will prevail.
Liberia: Create a Power-Sharing Government, Says NPP
Monrovia, Oct. 20-The former ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP) is
recommending to the two parties in the run-off elections to immediately
begin serious negotiations towards the formation of an alliance between
themselves aimed at creating a power-sharing government.

In a release signed by its Standard Bearer, Dr. Roland Massaquoi, the
statement said that preliminary election results are a clear indication
that Liberian voters anxiously desire a power-sharing government rather
than dominance by any one party or philosophy.

The release quotes the NPP as saying they believe this achievement would
diminish the fears and tension inherent in an inexperienced electorate
relative to the fate and future of the loser in hands of the winner.
Liberia: UNMIL to Discuss with ECOWAS and Security Council on LNP and Fire
Arms
Monrovia, Oct. 20-The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) says it
wants to hold consultations with ECOWAS and the United Nations Security
Council over decision to give fire arms to the Liberia National Police.

According to the spokesperson of UNMIL, Paul Risley, the decision is good
and timely; but Liberia is still undergoing a transition.

Earlier this week, transitional government’s Information Minister Dr.
William Allen confirmed a decision by the Nigerian Government to give side
arms among other logistics to the Liberia National Police.
Liberia: Bryant Appoints TRC Committee
Monrovia, Oct. 20-The National Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL)
Wednesday constituted a nine-member Truth and Reconciliation Commission
(TRC) in keeping with Article 13 of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The Act establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was signed
into law on 10 June 2005 following its passage by the transitional
legislative assembly a day earlier.

Kafumba Konneh, Rev. (Ambassador) Gerald Coleman, Cllr. Pearl Brown-Bull,
