 Ousman Sabally, a Senior Master and teacher at St. Augustine's secondary
school in Banjul has sued the IGP, the Interior Secretary and the Attorney
General for injuries and special damages. According to the statement of claim
of the plaintiff, he is pleading that he was violently assaulted by six
members of the security personnel which resulted in bruises and other
injuries on his face and other parts of the body. He identified some of the
personnel as members of the Police Intervention Unit who were led by one Omar
Darboe also a member of the unit.

At the time, the plaintiff was assaulted the said security personnel were
operating within the scope of the employment with the defendants, the IGP,
the Interior Secretary and the Attorney General. He further claims that by
acting as aforesaid, the security personnel were actuated by malevolence or
spite towards him, and thereby intended to and did humiliate him in the
presence of his students and colleagues ad subjected him to ridicule and
contempt in public by reason whereof the injury to him has been greatly
aggravated.

The plaintiff claims against the defendants jointly and severally the sum of
D500,000 as damages for assault, injuries sustained as a result of the
unlawful acts of the security personnel, pain and suffering, humiliation in
the eyes of the public.

The plaintiff is represented by his wife (for the first time in The Gambia)
Mrs. Hawa Ceesay-Sabally. There is no indication as to when the case will be
heard.
