All borders to close from Wednesday to Friday Air, seaport to remain open

Members of the public are hereby informed that due to the Presidential
election taking place in The Gambia, all borders would be closed from 6 am
on Wednesday October 17 to Friday, October 19, 2001.

However, a release from the Department of State for the Interior states that
sea and air ports would remain open to traffic as usual. Security officers
are therefore urged to be extra vigilant and to thoroughly search all
vehicles entering The Gambia.

The Department of State wishes to appeal to all Gambians to be law abiding
and tolerant and to ensure that they go about their political activities in
a peaceful manner, cast their votes and remain indoors to safeguard the
peace and stability for which The Gambia is known. The release also says
that it is a criminal offence to go around in public armed. "Any offenders
caught violating the law will be dealt with severely. All are therefore
warned to desist from any act of violence or vandalism in their own
interest," the release concludes.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission has also
issued a press release informing all prospective voters in the Presidential
election that only those whose names appear in the final register of voters
would be allowed to vote. All presiding officers are requested to comply
with this directive.
