JFP gets 252 wheelchairs Written by Alieu Badara Ceesay- Observer   Friday, 23 September 2005 At least 252 brand new wheelchairs were yesterday donated by the Taiwanese ambassador to The Gambia Patrick Chang to the Jammeh Foundation for Peace through the vice president Isatou Njie-Saidy at a ceremony held at her office in Banjul.
The items were given to the Taiwanese ambassador by Master Wuili the head of a South Africa-based school, the Pu-hsign Educational Foundation. Master Wuili has been working in Africa for 10 years now and raises funds from Taiwan to support the disabled community of The Gambia.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Chang disclosed that Taiwan will provide about one million Taiwanes dollars to the JFP to help needy and deserving students to be educated. It will also provide 12 containers of brand new clothes for Gambians, the ambassador said.

He said the Pu-hsign Educational Foundation was established in April 2000 by Jin-wao and was later taken over in 2004 by Master Wuili, who has made similar donations to other African countries.

The vice president, Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy, commended the Taiwanese ambassador for the gesture and said the wheelchairs it will enable the disabled community to also contribute their own quota to the socio-economic development of the country. “I want to applaud the people of Taiwan for assisting The Gambia in many ways,” she said.

According to her, the Jammeh Foundation for Peace was established to support the needy in health, agriculture, education, among others.

The Executive director of the Jammeh Foundation for Peace, Hendrieta Sonko, said the Taiwanese have been assisting the JFP in the areas of health and education, adding that the wheelchairs will be well used.
