Dear Comrade Jassey-Conteh,

As a democrat myself, I agree in principle that we could possibly discuss, and freely at that, any issue under the sun. But you will equally agree with me that there are sensitivities that need to be recognized so that we are not fanning any flames. In fact, we could discuss with respect to the other persons, views and audiences on the Gambia-L; I mean discussing with civility and pride to promote a better image of our country.

If a person professes tribalism, such a person needs education, for any other response could be as bad as what you seek to fight.Remember the Mandinka saying "EBUKA BUWO KUU SUMUNALA" meaning 'you do not wash faeces with urine'. If that is true and it is, then any body who responds to an act of tribalism with the seeming glorification of your tribe over others is guilty of the same.

I think history, and the present conflict-ridden situation of Africa(with roots in tribal and natural resources) should give every Gambian some cues to avoid making statements with tribal undertones...Most importantly, the essence of tribe and ethnicity is not and should be about the superiority, inferiority of any tribe or social group.

Finally Jassey, to build a better Gambia requires that we extend tolerance to views and beliefs that exist in our society and are not necessarily ours. It requires us to be able to debate strongly on matters of national importance without hurling insults. In essence, contrary to what you seem to postulate, I am not the least suggesting an end to the discussion about tribe, ethnicity or any thing, instead, I am requesting that the discussions be done in an atmosphere of mutual respect among those making any exchanges, but especially for the silent majority(the listening majority).

I hope I have not tread on any sacred grounds and that I have expressed what we all desire on this forum - discussions on facts and issues, with little room for unbridled sentiments, prejudice and so forth.

I extend my greetings and prayers to all Gambians for a free, fair and peaceful election; while I re-echo our National Anthem thus: "For The Gambia our homeland....keep us great God of nations to The Gambia ever true". Therefore I thank you, Bambalaye and my 'Toma' Alieu Sanyang, for accepting my humble suggestions to stop the negative discussions...I love you all and I hope we will redirect our passions to those good contributions all of us have been making on the L.

My loyalty is to The Gambia; let us all proclaim it as the only way forward!

Alieu Darboe

Mr. Darboe:

The issue of tribalism has to be discussed freely in The Gambia. We cannot
side-step this important issue because it is the ugliest of the ugliest. Ever
since Independence, most politicians have shied away from discussing
this important topic.

There is no way we can move forward when indifferences are exhibited
continuously. So is it proper to say: "We would rather have Jammeh than
a Mandinka president." Does this mean that a dictator is better than all
Mandinkas? This is an abomination. It should be condemned.

Naphiyo,
Comrade Jassey-Conteh

>I wish to advice that while it is productive to vehemently take part in tetchy debates, it is even more prudent to stop debating when no learning is taking place. It is a pity that the relevant topic of the future of our country could not be discussed in other than this vile trade of insults.

>When a discussion of a national character is reduced to the venting of personal sentiments rather than convincing factual arguments, people get angry, frustrated and at best alienated. Hitherto to the hurling of insults, I have enjoyed your postings, as I find Bambalaye and Jassey sharing valuable information about politics in The Gambia.
>
>I would beg kindly that we all discuss with respect for all views, for that truly is the bottom line in any democratic environment. Democracy indeed is not only a system of government, it is a way of life'. Certainly we cannot for once abandon discussing our country, but kindly let`s muster the courage to listen to even the "most insane person" without reproach, with a right of reply to such insanity, at least to educate and save others from perilous misinformation...
