Politician’s supporters ransack radio station, attack journalists  
with machetes

Reporters Without Borders voiced outrage today at a violent attack  
yesterday on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), a  
public radio broadcaster in Ibadan, in the southwestern state of Oyo,  
by around 100 supporters of local politician who were angered by an  
announcement that state elections would go ahead today. Equipment was  
smashed and at least 10 journalists were hurt.

“The power struggle between two of the ruling party’s local barons  
has gone beyond being a scandal,” the press freedom organisation  
said. “BCOS’s journalists have been the victim of hatred whipped up  
to serve the ambitions of powerful men. This unprecedented act of  
brutality must be clearly and firmly punished.”

About 100 supporters of local politician Christopher Alao Akala, some  
armed with machetes, burst into BCOS headquarters at Orita Basorun,  
in Ibadan, at about 5 p.m. yesterday and ransacked it. Many employees  
fled but others were trapped in their offices. At least 10 employees  
received machete wounds. Most were robbed of their money and mobile  
phones. Several cars in the BCOS car park were vandalised. The  
station has stopped broadcasting.

After spending about an hour at BCOS headquarters, the protestors  
then went to the Ibadan city hall, known as Mapo Hall, where they  
attacked staff and destroyed the BCOS transmitters located there.  
They also damaged equipment belonging Reltel Wireless Limited, a  
telecommunications company housed on BCOS premises.

Several local sources said the attacks were triggered by BCOS’s  
announcing that the state electoral commission had decided to go  
ahead with elections today, a move opposed by Akala, a former deputy  
governor who is the candidate of the ruling People’s Democratic Party  
(PDP) for governor.

A coalition of 11 parties allied to the PDP has been trying to block  
incumbent governor Rasheed Ladoja’s desire to hold the elections  
before his term ends on 29 May. Akala and Ladoja have been locked in  
a battle for the control of Oyo state for several years.

Une radio saccagée par une centaine de partisans d’un homme  
politique, une dizaine de journalistes blessés

Reporters sans frontières est scandalisée par le saccage de la radio  
publique Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) et l’agression  
physique dont ont été victimes une dizaine de journalistes, le 23 mai  
2007, de la part d’une centaine de partisans de Christopher Alao  
Akala, un homme politique d’Ibadan (Sud-Ouest).

"La lutte pour le pouvoir de deux barons du parti présidentiel a  
atteint un sommet du scandale. Les journalistes de la BCOS ont été  
les victimes des haines exacerbées au nom de l’ambition de deux  
hommes puissants. Cet acte d’une brutalité inégalée dans le pays doit  
appeler des sanctions claires et fermes", a déclaré l’organisation.

Le 23 mai 2007, à environ 17 heures, une centaine de personnes, dont  
certains étaient armés de machettes, ont fait irruption dans les  
locaux d’Orita Basorun de la BCOS à Ibaban et les ont saccagés. De  
nombreux employés ont fui devant la brutalité des agresseurs, mais  
certains autres se sont retrouvés piégés dans les bureaux. Au moins  
une dizaine d’employés ont été blessés à coups de machette. La  
plupart ont été dépouillés de l’argent qu’ils portaient sur eux et de  
leur téléphone portable. Plusieurs véhicules garés dans le parking de  
la radio ont été vandalisés. La station a dû cesser d’émettre.

Après une heure passée dans les locaux de la BCOS, le groupe  
d’agresseurs s’est ensuite dirigé vers Mapo Hall, la mairie de la  
ville, où ils ont agressé le personnel et détruit les émetteurs de la  
radio. Les équipements d’une entreprise de télécommunications  
hébergés par la BCOS, Reltel Wireless Limited, ont été endommagés au  
cours du raid.

Selon des sources locales, cette descente est la conséquence de la  
diffusion, sur les ondes de la BCOS, de l’annonce de la décision de  
la commission électorale de l’Etat de maintenir les élections  
provinciales au 24 mai. La tenue de ce scrutin à cette date est  
contestée par l’ancien vice-gouverneur Christopher Alao Akala,  
candidat du People’s Democratic Party (PDP, au pouvoir). Une  
coalition de onze partis, alliés au parti présidentiel, avait  
contesté la décision du gouverneur sortant, Rasheed Ladoja,  
d’organiser le scrutin avant le terme officiel de son mandat, le 29  
mai. Christopher Alao Akala et Rasheed Ladoja sont engagés depuis  
plusieurs années dans une lutte fratricide pour le contrôle du  
gouvernorat.
