Matar,
I apologize for not responding to your posting on time. However, you may be
aware that we were hit by huricanne Juan, the impact of which made it
impossible for me to access my mails in the past three days.
Generally, I have no quarrel with your position, I merely wanted to make the
distinction that while resignation may serve as a means of salvaging
credibility, it would not automatically relieve one of past resposibilities.
Furthermore, I strongly believe that both The Gambia and VP Isatou Njie
Saidy may stand to gain something positive in one way or another, if she
resigns from a government that has over the years, come to be the architect
of unending socio economic woes and injustices for our people. I believe
that the less Gambians we have counting themseves in support of Jammeh's
barbarous regime, the easier our task of overhauling it.
From yet another perspective, VP Njie Saidy may have commited crimes against
us, I dont think she should be discouraged from making amends if she so
desires. Serious her crimes may be, I dont want to believe she is beyond
redemption.
Omar Joof.

>>Burang,
>>On sunday April 9th, 2000 during our final meeting in the build-up to what
>>we had planned to be a peaceful demonstration, the question "what do we do
>>in self defence in case we are attacked by the paramilitary police", came
>>up
>>for discussions. The consensus at our meeting was that since we were
>>planning a peaceful demonstration, all factors that had the potential to
>>disrupt the peace on our side should be eliminated. Our self defence was
>>purported to be in remaining as peaceful as possible. You can therefore
>>imagine our utter amazement when VP Isatou Njie Saidy claimed in her first
>>statement to the public, that the shootings started from amongst the
>>demonstrating students. It was even more shocking to us not only because
>>it
>>came from a personality for whom the majority in the student leadership
>>had
>>tremendous respect for, but also because we had a meeting with her slated
>>for that very morning. Amongst other things, we had hoped that  as a lady;
>>and a mother, she could have been sympathetic to our course with regards
>>the
>>rape case of the thirteen year old school girl.
>>We have no doubt that the VP's own children were made to feel very
>>uncomfortable by her infamous statement. However, if she feels this is the
>>right time to resign and make amends for her wrongs to Gambians in general
>>and Gambian students in particular, she should feel free to do so.
>>Whatever
>>it takes, it would be better for her to be at peace with Gambians, than
>>be
>>part of a political leadership, which has demonized itself so badly
>>through
>>banditry, barbarity, brutality, criminality, incompetence and bad
>>governance, that its very existence is becoming more and more untenable
>>day
>>in day out. But leaving the Jammeh goverment is an option which she will
>>have to make on her own; just as forgiving her for the wrongs she did to
>>us
>>in the execution of her responsibilities is a matter for the souvereign
>>people of the Gambia.
