Kebba Sanyang Sacked And Peter Singhateh Discharged By The Gambia Journal
Sep 25, 2007, 16:09 Banjul, The Gambia Journal

Just over a week after making some stormy changes in his cabinet, President Jammeh, on Monday 14th September introduced further changes in cabinet and the army, according to GRTS radio monitored in Banjul. Mr. Kebba Sanyang, who was last week moved from his position as Attorney General and Secretary of State for Justice to be the Secretary of State for Works and Infrastructure, has been relieved of this position. In another re-configuration of cabinet portfolios, the responsibility of Religious Affairs has been transferred to the Department of State for Local Government and Lands. The announcement carried no explanation for the changes. Mr. Sanyang, who had been a senior magistrate at the Kanifing Magistrates Court, was appointed to the position of Attorney General and Secretary of State for Justice in the middle of last year. No successor to his position has yet been announced, but prior to last week’s cabinet reshuffle, President Jammeh himself was in control of the
Department of State for Works and Infrastructure. It is not known if Mr. Sanyang will return to his former magisterial job.
In a move that surprised few, President Jammeh has relieved Lt. Peter Singhateh, brother of the former Secretary of State for the Forest and Environment Edward Singhateh, of his commanding position in the army also discharged from the Gambian National Army. Peter Singhateh was the Deputy Commander of the Defense Staff. The Gambia Journal has learnt that Peter Singhateh left the country only a week for a-one year training in an unnamed foreign country. Peter Singhateh is a younger brother to Mr. Edward Singhateh who until his abrupt dismissal on the 13th of this month had been the longest serving cabinet member of the Second Republic. Together with Yahya Jammeh, Edward conspired to launch the 1994 coup that ushered the country into the Second Republic. He was a respected member of the regime who was out-maneuvered by Jammeh in the dirty game of power politics and systematically emasculated to end up where he is today, many observers agree. The Singhateh brothers were
looked at with awe in the army and before he was considerably weakened by the end of the last decade, Mr. Singhateh enjoyed lot of respect for his professionalism. After the dismissal of Edward from cabinet position, many had wondered what Mr. Peter Singhateh might do in reaction to his elder brother’s humiliation.
