LAGOS, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Police used teargas to drive irate Nigerian fans
from their team's dressing-room on Friday after the co-hosts drew 0-0 with
Congo in the African Nations Cup.
Players, including big names such as Nwankwo Kanu, Sunday Oliseh and Finidi
George, were locked inside the changing-room for their own safety.
Local fans had expected favourites Nigeria to win and virtually ensure their
passage to the quarter-finals but the team produced a sorry performance
against unfancied Congo in their second group D game.
Players, who have this week been caught up in a row over bonuses, hung their
heads in shame at the end of the match as angry fans threw plastic bottles.
Soccer is treated with almost religious devotion by many of the West African
country's 108 million people.
