Malian, Guinean drivers threaten to defy border blockade
Written by Freddy Jammeh

Wednesday, 28 September 2005 Stranded Guinean and Malian truck drivers at Badiara, the border village near the Senegalese town of Vellingara,
have threatened to force their way into The Gambia in defiance of the unilateral border blockade imposed by the Senegalese transport union.
Speaking to Sud FM, Baldeh Wuri Pare, a Guinean driver who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said the blockade is uncalled-for, unAfrican and even inhuman. He said he and his colleagues have been made to endure intolerable conditions at the border since August when they were prevented from travelling to The Gambia by the Senegalese immigration authorities.
“We were on our way to Basse when the Senegalese asked us to stop and since then we have been here. We spent a month sleeping in our trucks,’’ he told Sud FM.
He explained that the living conditions at Badiara, the border village near Vellingara, is terrible. “We are innocent victims of a problem which we know nothing about. We are therefore calling on the Senegalese authorities to remove this blockade and allow us to proceed on our normal business,’’ he said. He called on the Senegaleses authorities to lift the unilateral blockade as soon as possible. Baldeh Wurri also said that some drivers who could not cope with the suffering had to return home.
