Tuesday, September 11, 2001 was a disaster for the people of
the United States and the World. The heart of Capitalism and
the World’s Military nerve Center—Pentagon was attacked and
sustain heavy damage and the loss of lives. We see with
gladness the tough talk of war has now been temper with caution
and prudence. We must applaud the George Bush government for
maturity. The doers must be made to answer for their crime.

We are now reading about a new wave of biological warfare
coming through the post office –parcels being sent in the
parcel are a sponge with virus to attack the human body. It is
alleged that seven deaths have resulted from this. The Police
have not been able to identify the source. If this is true the
WEST AFRICA NEWSLETTER (WAN), call on the intelligent community
to please find the source and nip it in the butt before it gets
out off hands. We must not be caught flat-footed as in the
case of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Facility (GEF) of a US$60 million programme to introduce fuel-
cell powered buses in the mass transit systems of six major

Faso’s species profile includes 655 wildlife species (mammals
plus and birds); 330 aquatic species (including 121 fish
species), and 1054 plant species (751 grass and 304 tree and
brush species). Solid statistics on biodiversity trends are not
available, but the facts are dire. Natural habitats--Sudanian
or Sahelian-- are now almost restricted to parks

Burkina Faso is a poor landlocked country with a limited
resource base, high vulnerability to external shocks, and acute
social needs. With a population of nearly 12 million and
growing at about 2.8 percent per annum, Burkina Faso's GNP per
capita was US$230 in 1999. Even though Burkina Faso is one of
the least urbanized countries in the region, the pace of
urbanization has been very rapid over the last 15 years.
Ouagadougou, the capital city, has a population of 1 million
inhabitants and Bobo Dioulasso, the second main urban center in
the country, has a population of 500,000 inhabitants (2000).


10. ECOWAS NEWS
ECOWAS, EUROPEAN UNION FINE TUNE AGENDA FOR MINISTERIAL

ECOWAS and a 13-man European Union delegation made up of
European Union Ambassadors met at ECOWAS Secretariat on 20th
September 2001 to review their economic, political and security
cooperation. The purpose is to prepare for the 2nd European
Union/ECOWAS Ministerial meeting between the two institutions
to be held in Brussels on 12th October 2001.The EU delegation
was led by Josef Smets, Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, whose
country is the current chairman of the EU, while the Executive
Secretary, Lansana Kouyaté headed the ECOWAS delegation. In
attendance was also, Seydou Diatigui Diarra, Malian ambassador
to Nigeria and chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Mediation and
Security at ambassadorial level.
