NEWS International appeal for funds to transport opot's body to Kenya By Mapambano Kenya

---------------------------------

December 19, 2005
The body of Mr. Aurther Opot, a Kenyan Journalist who died in Stockholm on November 21st 2005, cannot be transported to Kenya for burial because the tiny Kenyan community in Stockholm has been unable to raise the 40.000 kr (US Dollars 5.000) needed to transport Opot?s body home. Relatives are awaiting for Opot?s body in Kenya but the main problem is that so far, Kenyans in Stockholm have only been able to raise 14.000 kr (US Dollars 1.777). The amount stood at 17.000kr before deduction of expenses.

According to the Opot Fund Raising Committee, a new fund raising is being planned but in the meantime, the Committee has decided to make an International appeal to Kenyans, friends and sympathizers for help. Any amount will be useful.

The position of Opot?s family is that the late Kenyans body has to be buried in his ancestral village in Kenya as per Opot?s Luo traditions. The Kenya Socialist Democratic Alliance (KSDA) has taken the responsibility of hosting the Opot fund raising campaign at its web site as a contribution to efforts by Kenyans in Sweden to transport Opot?s body to Kenya. Video clips of both the circumstances that led to Opot?s death and a fund raising by Kenyans in Stockholm are available at KSDA's web site (see link below where you can also make your contribution)

  INITIAL REPORT ON OPOT?S DEATHNovember 30th 2005
KENYAN DIES IN STOCKHOLM

Mr. Aurther Opot, a Kenyan Journalist, has died in Stockholm. Mr. Opot fell down from a staircase in Central Stockholm and died soon afterwards. According to Mr. Arvi, an African-American Artist and close friend of Opot who was accommodating him at the time of his death, the Kenyan was on his way to the birthday party of his former Swedish wife when he slipped on the staircase and fell down, sustaining a fracture on his head.

Mr. Arvi said that a colleague who was on his way upstairs noticed Mr. Opot lying down and alerted friends who were gathered at his studio. Mr. Opot was then carried by his friends to the studio where he was placed on a bed to rest.

Mr. Arvi said that Mr. Opot then began to have problems with breathing before his pulse "appeared to stop". At this point, an ambulance was called but when the ambulance personnel noticed that Mr. Opot was not breathing, a Doctor was called in who pronounced him "clinically dead". Mr. Opot's body was then moved to the mortuary.

Mr. Arvi said that when they picked up Mr. Opot from where he had fallen, they did not know that Opot was in a critical condition as there was no bleeding although he had suffered a fractured skull. Mr. Arvi said that if they had noticed the seriousness of the situation, they could have called an ambulance immediately.

A fundraising has been called by Kenyans in Stockholm on Saturday December 3rd at Alby Skolan to raise money for the transportation of Opot's body back to Kenya. Family members have already been informed and they are awaiting for the body. Dr. Otieno Wariaro, Chairman of "Opot Funeral Committee" has communicated to Opot's brother in Kenya who has said that the family was shocked with the news. Opot was in Kenya early this year to unite with members of his family.

Mr. Opot settled in Sweden in the 70s and is well known for having played a leading role in the liberation struggle of FRELIMO in Mozambique. Mr. Opot was connected to the smuggling of arms to FRELIMO, an activity that gave him problems with the CIA which threatened him with death.

Opot's story about his FRELIMO links and problems with the CIA have been published widely in several newspapers in Sweden including publications in Dagens Nyheter, the biggest morning newspaper in Sweden. Opot has been keeping a low profile in Stockholm after his FRELIMO links became public. From available information, it is widely believed by many Kenyans that Opot's death was purely accidental and that the CIA did not play any role in his death.

Further information about Mr. Opot's funeral arrangements can be obtained through Dr. Otieno Wariaro at. ++46737538261. A video footage of circumstances leading to Opot's death is available at. Www.kenyasocialist.org. Click on "Mapambano Video Feeds".
