Hamjatta,

I'm in a choke-hold, but I've got to drop a line here. First, I have to say
that, I wish you didn't go with "rag" to criticize your target. I think you
can find a better substitute. "Rag" is inflammatory, and is bound to cloud
what is otherwise a superb article in my judgment. Indeed, what you've
written about the PPP/Jawara cannot be challenged by anyone based on FACTS
alone. Much of what is being said, or insinuated about the Jawara/PPP era is
clearly a re-write of Gambian history. It has very little to do with what
ACTUALLY happened. I've said this here before, and I'll say it again: the
largest and ONLY block of our population who have voted CONSISTENTLY against
Jawara, were Baddibu people. Even when Sheriff Dibba was losing to Dr. Saho
in Parlimentary Elections, he was defeating Jawara in the Prez Election in
Baddibu. And you simply can't be more Mandingo than baddibu people.

Personally, I've resigned myself to just studying/enjoying Gambians in this
era. Everything -even plain truth- is now RELATIVE in that small country.
Some people want to hear the truth as long as it's about someone else. But,
God help you if you say something they don't like. If there's any use for
Yaya Jammeh, he has forced all politically active Gambians to reveal
themselves. What each of us say vis-a-vis our present status reveals volumes
about our true characters, because amid all the contradictions, and
trickery, lies the unshakeable truth: the man called DK Jawara, could have
done a lot better for us if he tried, but one thing he did accomplish
admirably, was to bring his protectorate kin (from ALL creeds,) and urban
Gambia together under one very peaceful umbrella. And for THREE DECADES!
Basic decency requires that we accord him at least that much credit.

Overall though, I'll advice you to "Just Chill," and enjoy the scene. The
Yaya Jammeh house is built on lies, and like all lies, it'll come crashing
down before you know it. So, why sweat?

Saul.
