October 17, 2005
MONROVIA,-- Liberian football legend George oppong Weah will face off with
Liberia's former finance minister in a presidential election run-off on
November 8, National Electoral Commission Chairman Frances Morris said
today.

With 90 percent of votes tallied, Weah received 257,027 while his closest
rival, former Finance Minister Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf got 175,520. The
latest results were based on votes counted from 2,781 polling stations out
of 3,000.

The run-off is necessary because none of the 22 candidates in the October
11 polls won at least 51 percent of the vote.

Editoria: 'Educated' vs. 'Uneducated'

THE FUTURE of Liberia has come down to this: George Oppong Manneh Weah
against Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, an ironic parallel of individuals whose
quest for the ultimate prize seems destined to be the most-closely
evaluated, most-discussed and most-watched presidential match-ups in the
history of Liberia.

Liberia's King Makers: Who Will Switch Votes

Question: What does Joseph Korto, Alhaji Kromah, Charles Brumskine,
Winston Tubman and Varney Sherman have in common? Answer: They hold the
cards that should decide the fate of Liberia.

Make no mistake; these are the key players in this late decisive stage of
the first elections in post-war Liberia. Not the Harvard-trained Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf or the football-legend-turned politician, George Oppong
Manneh Weah.

With over 80% of the votes counted, it is apparently clear that a run-off
will decide who occupies the executive mansion. Neither Weah, of the
Coalition of Democratic Change (CDC), nor Sirleaf of the Unity Party who
have consistently held the top two spots are likely to get the 51%
required to claim victory.
