October 19, 2005
The Gambia is today sending a strong contingent of 196 uniform men to the
Sudanese troubled region of Darfur for a peacekeeping mission for a period
of one year, The ALLGAMBIAN online Newspaper gathered.

The said troop will replace the first Gambian contingent send in December
2004 to help restore peace and stability in the lawless region of Sudan.

At a farewell ceremony held at the Fajara Army Barracks today, the army
chief of Defense Staff Lt. Colonel Assan Sarr said “ you are all
professional soldiers and you are expected to help in bringing peace to
those people who are in dire need of it” Mr.Sarr went further to implore
on his men to be steadfast in their duties as peacemakers and also warn
them to desist from raping and other sexual related activities.

He reminded the soldiers about the global HIV/Aids pandemic and therefore
warned them to avoid risky sexual behaviours. “As you are all married men,
you should be aware of the spread of HIV/Aids, which is on the increase.
We don’t want our young men to be victims of HIV” Lt.Colonel Sarr noted.
He assured the jubilant soldiers that the whole nation will rally behind
them and give them the necessary support needed.

In her opening statement the Vice president Madam Isatou Njie-Saidy,
praised The Gambia for her role in bringing peace and order in the
troubled Sudanese region and other war ravaged African countries. She says
"other countries could emulate from Gambia's tireless efforts in bringing
peace in the sub-region."

“The Gambia will continue to play such important roles in restoring peace
and order in trouble regions of Africa” she added. She told soldiers that
the president is fully behind them and is ready to help in any way to
perform their duties. In attendance were dignitaries, security chiefs and
family members of the departing soldiers.
