I am not sure how it may came about but it looks like it is just a pronunciation issue. Just like the Bajo/Bayo.

Are they originally 'Bah'? Possibly for I have never seen the name out of the Senegambia region as most Fula names are in all parts of Africa.

Our heavy pronunciations and intonations have to do with the dexterity of
the tongue sometimes. Mandingka's and Africans in general are known to have
a problem in that area. Another theory is that "Domoda" has something
to do
with the heavy intonations and hoarse voices. Ok, I don't want to start a
fight here but, the English could have saved a letter and all this trouble
by just spelling it as "Kemistry" instead. Perhaps a Mandingkanized
or
Banjulized English will do the trick. Who said we can't have our own eh?

> Gainako, This is another area we need expert help. I grew up with Bandeh
as
> in Lamin Bandeh or Cherno Bandeh just to start reading Baldeh at school.
> Whether it is the Fula /Fulbe finding their own voice I do not know but it
> is worth looking into.
> BambaLaye you ask my Mandinka folk to pronounce CHEmistry or a Banjulian
> to say TH. Thats another story.

>> The "P" in Arabic is pronounced as "B." The letter
"F" is the equivalent
>> of
>> "fa" in Arabic.
>> You're right, out of the 28 alphabets in Arabic, there is no
equivalent
>> for
>> "P" thus they pronounce "P" as "B" or
"ba" in Arabic. Have you talked to a
>> Middle-Eastern in English lately?
>> Try to have them say "piss off"...they might spit in your
face or pull a
>> sword at you -:))

>>> Baldeh is a last name certainly. There might be 'Bandeh'
as well, just
>>> because of the pronounciation difficulty. I am convinced that it
should
>>> be
>>> Baldeh, which is the same as Bah.
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>> On the other hand, one cannot rule out that a surname
'Bandeh' might
>>> exist.
>>>
>>> A little observation:
>>>
>>> For e.g.
>>>
>>> Some non-Fulbe from my home village pronounce 'Baldeh' as
'Bandeh.' There
>>> are numerous alphabets that are in 'hal-pular' that I
don't find in
>>> english
>>> and others. It might be the same for others as well. In a similar
vein,
>>> arabic doesn't have 'p', instead they use 'f'
for the work of the 'P'.
>>>
>>> The above is just my observation and not from any book . I will
keep an
>>> eye
>>> to it, and probably further to ask my matrilineal uncles who are
Baldeh
>>> by
>>> surnames. May be others might come to your aid as well if you
state what
>>> led
>>> to your question.
>>>
>>> Baldeh-bolong!

>>>>
>>>> Probably both. I know people who have the last name Baldeh and
others
>>>>
>>>>
>>> with the last name Bandeh. it could also be, that somehow along
the line,
>>> one of these last names changed due to mispronunciation and just
stuck.
>>> Or
>>> that they just completely have nothing to do with each other. i
am not
>>> an
>>> expert on this, but that is my take, Hopefully the Baldeh's
can shed some
>>> light on this
