GAMTEL’S DEPUTY MANAGER, OTHERS ACCUSED OF COUP PLOT Posted

A deputy manager with Gamtel, Ebrima Yarbo is reported to have
been detained for alleged involvement in a coup plot
to overthrow the government of President Yahya Jammeh, according
to the Daily Observer reports.
Lawyer Ousman Silla, acting on behalf of Haddy Sarr, wife of
Ebrima Yarbo, yesterday morning filed a 17-point
affidavit before the High Court demanding the release of Mr Yarbo.
In the affidavit, Haddy Sarr narrated how security
men in mufti believed to be NIA officers or members of the
National Guard, stormed their home at 4am at 26
Fitzgerald Street, Banjul on June 24, to take away her husband.
She said the police were invited and they later took
him to the station and subsequently handed him over to the
security officials. She further deposed that since her
husband was taken away, “there has been no news or trace of him”
and that unless the court ordered his release, he
will “continue to languish in detention without just cause.”
In counter affidavit, the director of internal security at the
NIA, Foday Barry, stated among others, that, “there was an
intelligence report that Ebrima Yarbo and some military personnel
are planning to overthrow the government of The
Gambia by force…based on the intelligence report, our personnel
stepped up investigation in order to uncover their
plans which were later found out to be at advanced stage…”
He argued, “Since the alleged offence touches on state security,
releasing the alleged offender would seriously affect
further investigation into the alleged offence.”
The presiding judge, Justice Ihekire, adjourned the case to August
14 for ruling. Ebrima Yarbo remains in custody.
Meanwhile, Annika Renberg, the wife of detained Modou Dumo Sarho,
has said her lawyer has filed an affidavit for her
husband’s release yesterday afternoon.
