Is the Opposition in disarray barely two months to the presidential
elections? No inter-party meetings, no discussions, and of course nothing
about a common platform to confront the APRC come October! The APRC
meanwhile is consolidating its power by the day through the inducement and
intimidation of a gullible Gambian electorate.

The greatest obstacle to the removal of the APRC and its leadership is not
so much the lack of opposition unity as voter ignorance. Some of the scenes
of pelf and pomp arrogantly displayed by President Jammeh are just an
indication of the level of political maturity of Gambian society today. I
find it unbelievable that adults would be ridiculously chasing and dancing
around a generator newly acquired by the government at a time when even
children are less attracted to such outbursts of immaturity.

Gambia's political system looks like the old clock at MaCarthy Square: it
has been stuck in time since independence. It is a marauding system of
elitist politics; rude, arrogant and self-perpetuating. If the AFPRC/APRC
governments were meant to usher in a revolution, then they should go back
and consult the dictionary.

In my opinion, only an informed electorate, free from the shackles of
cronyism and dependency can free The Gambia of these types of leaders as we
have been unfortunate to witness since 1965. No coalitions or any amount of
condemnation can change a political system whose subjects are held down by
the chains of ignorance.

Hamadi.
