Gambian ex-President heads ECOWAS mission to Nigeria afrol News, 22 January - The deposed President of The Gambia, Sir Dawda Jawara, has been tasked to lead a fact-finding mission of Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) to Nigeria. The mission will be Mr Jawara's first since he was overthrown from power by a group of soldiers led by the current President, Yahya Jammeh, in 1994.
Mr Jawara's appointment was endorsed by the Executive Secretary of ECOWAS, Muhamed Ibn Chambas. The mission's mandate is to evaluate and report to the regional grouping on the situation in Nigeria ahead of the forthcoming elections scheduled for April this year.

"The mission is tasked with meeting and discussing with political parties, government authorities, Electoral Commissions and other structures, media representatives, civil society organisations and development partners to evaluate the political and security situation, the level of preparedness and probability for ECOWAS' additional contribution to the electoral process in Nigeria to ensure peace and security," read a statement issued by ECOWAS regional office in Banjul.

Mr Jawara's team is also tasked with collecting and identifying all the conflicting factors capable of influencing the successful organisation of the Nigerian elections.

Other members of the ECOWAS mission include the Deputy Speaker of Sierra Leone parliament, Elizabeth Alpha-Lavalie, Retired General Seth Obeng of the Armed Forces of Ghana and member of ECOWAS Council of Elders; Dr Koyo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Ghana; Dr Abdel Fatau Musah, Conflict Prevention Adviser, ECOWAS Commission and Francis Gabriel Oke, Programme Officer, Electoral Assistant Unit, ECOWAS.

The mission flies to Nigeria on 1 February, where it immediately is to start its work.
