On behalf of The Organisation Of Gambians in Sweden I take this opportunity
to congratulate the people of Senegal for the peaceful way in which the
presidential elections where conducted. This is not only a democratic
transition for Senegal or the SeneGambia region, but for the whole of
Africa. The alliance behind the old veteran leader has given us Africans the
way to make change in a peaceful and democratic way without the intervention
of the Military. It was only in Zambia where a sitting president " Dr.
Kenneth Kaunda" lost to the opposition.
Africa is undergoing a transition period where a single part cannot have the
monopoly to Govern for a long period without the opposition been able to
ouster the Governing party, if the majority do have the desire.
The Gambian people and Africans in Sweden are wishing you Abdoulaye Wade and
your alliance success in the difficult work that you have ahead of. We
assure you our fullest support and don't hesitate to consult us at any given
time in whatever work that you deem us necessary to undertake.
The Sene-Gambian region has been a long time burning issue for the outgoing
president " Mr. Abdou Joof " and President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia, and we
the Gambian people in Sweden wants to give you a helping hand by making our
region a peaceful and democratic place to leave.
You have a big task ahead of you and the whole world will be looking how you
will treat the outgoing president who is ready to bow-out gracefully after
been in power for a long period.
There are many African countries that are still having one party government
which needs changes of power in a peaceful and democratic way, but because
of the way in which sitting presidents consolidate state apparatus as the
ruling party's property, these makes it very difficult for the opposition to
ouster a sitting president. But Senegal has now given the African continent
an outstanding lesson in which a sitting president could be removed.
We are not forgetting the Senegalese police force in their dynamic
performance to stop violence and vote rigging during the elections. Long
live the people of Senegal and long live the African continent. We hope and
wish your alliance to continue in maintaining unity and dedication to the
Senegalese masses.
It is very good to have high expectations, but ask yourself what
contribution you could render to archive those expectations.
Sahir Drammeh Treasurer/Spokesman (Organisation of Gambians in Sweden).
