Third term debate hits Togo

The Prime Minister of Togo, Agbeyome Kodjo, says he supports a proposed
constitutional change that would allow the president to stand for elections
in 2003. The constitution was changed in 1992 to limit the president to two
terms of five years each. President Gyassingbe Eyadema, who has led the
country since 1967, has originally said he would like to rest, instead of
standing in the next elections.
A BBC correspondent in Togo says a constitutional change will be viewed by
the opposition as a violation of an agreement reached with the government in
peace talks in 1999. Mr Kodjo also announced that legislative elections
scheduled for next month had been postponed till next year for technical and
financial reasons.
