The September 11th, tragedy that devastated the World
Trade Center and the Pentagon is a wake up call to the
United States security apparatus to become more
vigilant and as the Bush led government plunder their
various options we at WAN pray that she uses sound
judgment in responding to the terrorists attacks. The
fear is that the Afghans have suffered a whole lot in
the last twenty years and bombarding them
indiscriminately will do more damage to these war weary
people. It is unfortunate that they are caught up in
this mayhem it is not of their own choosing but rather
the guys in white gowns, long beard and brim glasses
with the big guns and deep pockets. It is them we pray
that Bush and his men go after.

Rights Advocate Arrested

A Liberian human rights advocate, Mr. Thompson Adebayo,
Executive Director of the Liberia Human Rights Watch
(LHRW), a human rights advocacy group, turned himself
in to the Liberian Police authorities, and was
immediately put under arrest. The Acting National
Director of the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission
(JPC), Counsellor Francis Johnson-Morris, who delivered
him to the authorities, accompanied Mr. Ade-bayo.

September 16, Kampala, Uganda - As the world stands at
the brink of war
against the injustice of terrorism for the people of
the world, the Kampala
based Life in Africa Foundation is launching an Africa-
wide campaign calling
for all African people at the grassroots level to speak
out to the American
victims and the rest of the globe via the Internet.
Life in Africa's Kampala offices will provide free
writing, translation,
typing and email message posting services for every
woman, man, child and
community across the continent with something to say
about the current
global situation.
Africa's messages will be sent to influential
international email discussion
groups of journalists, editors and other people from
all over the world who
have agreed to participate in the Africa Speaks
Initiative. These audiences
will ensure that Africa's wisdom, lessons and
intolerance for more human
suffering will be heard around the globe.

Nigeria Gives Zambia US $92,000 for Refugees

The Nigerian government has given Zambia US $92,000 to
help it cope with refugees in the country, PANA
reported on Thursday. PANA said the Nigerian High
Commissioner to Zambia, Ibironke Vaughn-Adefope,
Wednesday presented the money to the Zambian government.
Ex-Child Fighters Reunited With Their Families

Fifteen former child fighters were reunited with their
families in an emotional ceremony on Monday in Kabala,
a town in Sierra Leone's northern district of
Koinadugu. Mothers wept and hugged their children as
local musicians drummed and played traditional music,
the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) reported. Some
of the children, who were meeting their families for
the first time in more than five years, did not
recognise their relatives, UNAMSIL said.

In what has been described as an unfortunate
development in Essau and it's surrounding communities,
reports reaching The Independent a rapid deterioration
of medical care over the past few months due to alleged
shortage of drugs and medication at the town's health
centre.

of cultivated farmland in the south of Guinea-Bissau,
threatening the livelihood of about 1,400 families,

Largest U.S. Summit of African Leaders Rescheduled

WASHINGTON - September 12, 2001 Due to yesterday’s
tragic events, The U.S.-Africa Business Summit has been
rescheduled for October 30-November 2.
The Summit, organized by Corporate Council on Africa
(CCA), will be the largest gathering of African
government and business leaders ever to convene in the
United States (outside of the United Nations). The
Summit was originally scheduled to take place in
Philadelphia on September 16-20.
Confirmed participants included 13 presidents, three
prime ministers, the president of OPEC, and the U.S.
Secretary of Commerce (scheduled to deliver a major
address of the Administration’s trade policy for
Africa), as well as numerous officials from the
multilateral to local levels.
The roster of confirmed delegates includes over 1400
delegates, with representation from all 53 African
nations.

4th annual Carole Simpson Leadership Institute. The
training conference will

This year’s program will bring together 25 women
journalists from across francophone West Africa .

employed full-time in
entry to mid-management level media posts and who have
not had access to
this type of training.

have “management leadership potential” will also be
chosen for this conference.

Liberia: Radio Closed in Connection With Anti-US
Statements
The Liberian government on Monday "temporarily" closed
down a private radio station, DC 101, for airing a talk
show in which callers expressed sentiments which the
authorities perceived as anti-American. A diplomatic
source in Monrovia told IRIN on Tuesday that callers
had expressed views which gave the impression that
Liberia was not in sympathy with the US following the
11 September terrorist ...
