Saul, thanks for bringing up the issue about the court order mandating Local
Government elections. So long as the constitutional amendments that seek to
take away our rights are not yet in place, the latest court rulings are the
law of the land. Therefore, the IEC should be using the scarce resources it
has to organize those elections rather than busying itself trying to replace
the UDP MPs with Yaya puppets. I hope also that the opposition is mindful of
the fact that if they accept a by-election, they are in effect accepting the
premise that general elections will not be held before September 2001. My
reading of the relevant laws suggests to me that if Parliament is going to
be dissolved in the next nine months, then we do not need a by-election. So
it is vital that we determine when Parliament is going to be dissolved.
