You nailed it on the head. This is the phenomenon that the late Dr. Mosebjane Malatsi used to call the diploma disease. Have you not noticed how the village tryant treats them. He treats them like his ditry linen, they go weed his farm even though some of them grew up in Banjul where there a re no farms, he comes up a with a concuction that the socalled intectuals are forced to buy.
I guarantee you that change in the Gambia is not going from the socaled intellectuals.

Dear List-Manager. I am sending this message as it was NOT set before. The content and sense is new.

Dear Compatriots,

The recent decision by the pro-Government Daily Observer Newspaper to publish the list of the Freedom Newspaper's online subscribers and the alleged sifting of allegiance of the Founding Editor Pa Nderry Mbai, is a cause for concern and refection below:

First, the Daily Observer publish the information without "researching" it. This is the same accusation the Gambia Goverment levels against journalists who refuse to betray the "sources" of their sensitive news/ reports!

Second, the Daily Observer is currently headed by "Dr." Saja Taal, a PhD Holder for that matter! It is clear that in our African societies where COLONIAL BRAIN-WASHING is deep rooted, PhD Holders are treated like "mini-gods who attained the highest level of academic and moral perfection!"

Third, the example of Saja Taal has once more demonstrated that many PEOPLE who are BLUFFING around with CATALOGUES of DIPLOMAS/ DEGREES are in real life, incompetent to the core. Saja's conduct has also confirmed that my people "STUDY only TO PASS EXAMS" and once they step out of the exam halls and into jobs in their fields of study, they fail like rotten potatoes!

Fourth, if we are wondering why Africa is still suffering, we should look at our so- called graduates and educated elites who only think of their ALLOWANCES, PER DIEMS and CEREMONIAL POSTS. They are all brain-washed to the extent that they dream of well paid Western jobs in Europe and Amrerica, adding to the problems of African brain-drain (cheaply blaming the politicians). They see anything traditional and African as backward and behave like BLACKS-WHITES (I am not against the whites. I am against incompetence and show-off)!

Fifth, we need to look at our development plans and not just favour people who simply exhibit the colourful "Honours", "As" and "Bs" at the expense of the PRACTICAL and CREATIVE ones. We should also accept that not ONLY those who go to school are the most competent as success in school does not mean success in life.

Sixth, our Gambian Economy is in the hands of the so-called "illiterates" who are saving many poeple from starvation: the list include the FULA traders, the SARAHULEY merchants and estate developers or the BADDIBUNKAS (Salifu K. Jaiteh is a good example). One will ask: where are the DEGREE HOLDERS in USA and EUROPE who feel they have the prefect tools to run our Gambia and Africa better than these "illiterate" experts in traditional African wisdom?

Seventh, in politics, you will agree with me that SEMI-LITERATE YAHYA JAMMEHT like (JJ RAWLINGS of GHANA) has taken control of our Gambia while the self-centered "educated elites" are behaving greedy. While President Jammeh is strenthening his army, supporters and grip on power, the EDUCATED politicans who rally being the opposition NADD, UDP or NRP cannot even agree on a common ground. Well done Western Education!!!

Finally, I at time feel embarassed to hear that may people who went to school cannot even pass an elementary test in their OWN mother tongues and yet they want to claim INTELECTUAL SUPREMACY and MONOPOLY!

I am sorry for the Gambia and Africa.

Alhagie (Emman) Bah
