Halifa Speaks About His Threat To Resign

The National Assembly member for Serrekunda Central Hon. Halifa Sallah has said that his threat to resign from the National Assembly if he fails to influence its work was more than an attempt to refute a statement made by the majority leader of the assembly that members should shake hands and be friendly with their electorates in order to return to the assembly when their time expires. Such a statement, he added, is a misconception and he was only trying to ridicule that statement. Mr Sallah made the clarification yesterday afternoon at a press conference held at his party bureau in Churchills Town.
According to Mr Sallah, he would rather prefer resigning rather than buying the idea that assembly members should shake hands with their electorates inorder for them to return to the assembly. His role in the assembly, he said, is to influence the process in the National Assembly and that he was trying to confirm that he would be effective and efficient in that office to the satisfaction of his people. Mr Sallah also described as the misconception that “if you are a minority, you cannot do anything in the assembly.”
On the issue of the president’s failure to appoint a new cabinet, Mr Sallah said, “ maybe the Attorney General should clarify his issue so that the matter can be settled.“ Mr Sallah quoted section 71, subsection 4 which states that the office of the Secretary of State shall become vacant when a person assumes the office of the president.
Whether he is going to retain the same cabinet or not, he must appoint his cabinet. Mr Sallah further went on to state that they would want to see a relationship of mutual respect and partnership between the executive and legislature rather than a relationship of patronage. He therefore hoped that from now on, the executive would recognised the importance of the National Assembly so that they can shape a way forward for this country.
