APRC militants clash with PDOIS in Sami

A group of men believed to be APRC supporters on September 27 allegedly
interrupted a PDOIS political rally in Sami Pachonki.

The incident reportedly occurred around seven O'clock in the evening when a
pick-up vehicle equipped with a public address system, hoisting a green
flag, came to the village square where the PDOIS meeting was being held. The
intruding vehicle, sources explained, then turned up the volume of the
public address system with music from the famous Army band’s Afinjang album
blasting through the air. Sources further alleged that one of the occupants
of the vehicle identified as Kebba Fanta Comma, addressed the the people
using the public address system.

According to sources, the villagers ordered him to leave with his men in
order to avoid trouble. One of them, sources further explained, realising
that they were being filmed by a GRTS cameraman, rushed towards him in an
attempt to grab his camera. “The villagers broke loose on him, beating him
mercilessly,” sources explained.

Sources said the village elders and PDOIS leadership intervened to prevent
the incident from worsening. Halifa Sallah told the villagers to keep peace
with their assailants by ignoring all their sinister plays. “If not, you
will give publicity to those who don't deserved it.” He however promised to
inform his party secretariat to forward the matter to the inspector general
of police and the Independent Electoral Commission so that such incidents
would not be repeated. The meeting however continued with Malick Ceesay, a
youth, calling on all and sundry to desist from violence. Both Halifa Sallah
and Sidia Jatta urged the electorates to attend meetings of all political
parties in order to know which party offered the best for the Gambian
people.
