Mr Jassey-Conteh,

I respect your position. I am sure you will not disagree that the main task
before every Gambian is how to enhance the liberty and prosperity of our
people.

Statistics do reveal that our peasants earn an income of D1812 a year since
Jawara's days up to this very day. 34% of the population are likely to die
before the age of 40. 50 % of the population are without safe drinking
water. Most of our people live in huts in the rural areas, or congested
urban dwellings. Less than 40,000 people can find work in the public or
private establishments, while 132,000 children enrolled in primary schools
in 1996 will be out in the streets before 2010.

I believe the duty of every Gambian and political party for that matter, is
to debate on these issues and find a solution to these and other problems,
instead of arguing whether Socialism or Communism are dead or alive. We will
be opening up a website hopefully by next week where we will be posting how
PDOIS intends to handle the problems of The Gambia. We hope you will be
visiting this website in order to critique our views constructively. We hope
other political parties will do the same.

I hope our disagreement on how to approach any given issue will not give
rise to castigations and ill feelings. We share the same country, but do not
necessarily have to share the same vision of how to carve its future. We do
not claim to have all the answers, but what we do promise is that we will
never be part of a government which will preside over the disintegration of
our country or the negation of the liberty and prosperity of our people.

With respect.

Halifa Sallah.
