I wonder why starchy carbs are preferred by Faigan? Is
it only because he has access to, or perhaps prefers,
grain products? In that case, his preference for
starchy carbs may be only coincidental.

Although there is evidence for paleo use of starchy
roots (like yams and similar), there is also evidence
of a paleo *preference* for fruits and berries as a
carb source. Why not try to use fruits and berries as
well as (or even instead of) whatever starchy root
vegetables you may find? You might even try some of
the squashes or melons in season now.
