I have always wondered about these things as well.  From what I can
understand during  biblical times women sat up in a balcony during the
temple meetings, men were in front and in order for women to hear what was
being said it was necessary to shout down to see what was happening.  I read
this somewhere, so if others have any more advice as to where one can read
about the daily life of those who lived in Bible times I'd be interested.  I
suppose that roles were more defined then, as to what a woman and man should
do.
I'll be interested in seeing what others think.
