OH it's not just catholics, the bible says not to have even the appearance
of sin and the temptation would be staggering.

Of course it is not wrong to live together if you don't have sex before
marriage.  However, we Catholics have a concept called the "near occasion of
sin" which means putting one's self in a position where sinning would
probably occur.  We aren't to do this.  We must not engage in any action
which would lead to impure thoughts which would translate themselves to
sinful acts.  If, however, you are strong and know you will not fall in to
sin I see nothing wrong with living together to expedite things.  Many are
weak, however,  and would fall pray to the temptations of the devil.
