WGBH National Center for Accessible Media Takes to the Road in November

Boston, MA. October 30, 2002.  Staff from WGBH's National Center for
Accessible Media (NCAM), the research and development division of the Media
Access Group at WGBH/Boston, will present on accessible technology
development and collaborations with academic institutions and industry
partners at several conferences in November.  NCAM focuses on creating
access to all forms of media for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind
or visually impaired.  Accessible technology solutions often better serve
those members of the community without disabilities.

November 6-8
5th Annual Accessing Higher Ground Conference
University of Colorado/Boulder
  NCAM director Larry Goldberg and project managers Geoff Freed and Andrew
Kirkpatrick will be hosting sessions of an NCAM Mini Institute— Assistive
Technology and Accessible Media in Higher Education— at the Accessing Higher
Ground Conference. NCAM's relevant projects will be presented as well as a
half-day hands-on session on MAGpie software, free, do-it-yourself
captioning and description software for digital media.  Additional sessions
of the mini institute will be presented by CAST, Macromedia and
Bookshare/Benetech.

Frontiers in Education 2002 "Leading a Revolution in Engineering and
Computer Science Education"
Boston, MA
 NCAM's director of Research and Development, Madeleine Rothberg, will
present on Engineering Education for Inclusive Design as part of a panel on
diversity in engineering education. She will present a case study under
development, in collaboration with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and
Education Development Centers Inc., that presents inclusive design
principles through the example of the creation of accessible talking ATMs.

The League for Innovation's Annual Conference on Information Technology

 Presentations from NCAM project manager Geoff Freed on Access to Distance
Learning projects underway at NCAM, including collaborations with the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the IMS Global Learning
Consortium.

 NCAM project manager Andrew Kirkpatrick will be offering the conference
keynote:  "Why Accessibility Matters," as well as two presentations, one on
Flash accessibility with Peter Pinch, the director of Interactive Content
for WGBH Interactive, and another on accessibility improvements in
Dreamweaver MX.  Finally, Andrew will be sitting on the Thunder Lizard panel
of experts for the session "Are You Accessible?"
