EAST's 2005 Annual Professional Development Conference
Friday, November 4, 2005
NOTE ALL TIMES ARE EASTERN
8:30 - 8:50
Welcoming Remarks by Dr. Libby Cohen (Principal Investigator of EAST)
Dr. Richard Pattenaude (President of the University of Southern Maine)
9:00 - 9:50
Engineering a Path to Success
Dr. Conway will speak about his personal experiences and the challenges and
opportunities for individuals with disabilities as they pursue education and
ultimately employment in the STEM workforce.
Presenter: Ted Conway, Professor, Department of Mechanical, Materials, and
Aerospace Engineering, University of Central Florida, and Program Director,
Research in Disabilities Education, National Science Foundation
10:00 - 10:50
Successful Mentoring Experiences from RASEM2
Students who read Braille, use a wheelchair, communicate with sign
language, or
process words and information differently may think that the chances are
slim of
ever becoming a scientist, technologist, engineer, or mathematician. But
RASEM2
mentors know better. The Principal Investigator of a regional alliance similar
to EAST, Dr. McCarthy will give highlights from several recent publications
and
lead a discussion of successful mentoring experiences.
Presenters: Bill McCarthy, Professor, College of Engineering, New Mexico State
University, Randy Larry, Mentoring Coordinator for RASEM, and Arnold Ontiveros
12:45 - 1:35
Remarks by Dr. Roosevelt Johnson, Program Director of the Alliances for
Graduate
Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Program at the National Science
Foundation, and Keynote Address by Dr. Lawrence Scadden will describe the
attitudinal and accessibility barriers he had to overcome to become a
laboratory
scientist. Dr. Scadden will discuss reasons why he left a successful
scientific
position to go to the National Science Foundation to establish the program on
science education for students with disabilities and the obstacles encountered
there. He will talk about what needs to be done now to provide students with
disabilities opportunities to study science and mathematics and pursue careers
in these disciplines.
1:45 - 2:35
Keeping Dreams Within Reach
Dr. Richard Radtke has successfully endeavored to keep his dreams within reach
in spite of his severe disability from multiple sclerosis. With five years of
study in the Arctic to his credit--and nine in the Antarctic--Dr. Radtke has
used these experiences to shape the world of oceanography and the way in which
the world defines disability. Dr. Radtke will share highlights of his
efforts to
make science accessible to all.
Presenters: Richard Radtke, Sea of Dreams Foundation, and Ocean Radtke
2:45 - 3:30
Keynote Address: Dr. Sheryl Burgstahler, Founder and Director of DO-IT
(Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) at the
University
of Washington, will summarize barriers encountered by people with disabilities
pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) and
interventions that promote success. She will share several stories of
individuals with disabilities who have overcome challenges in order to achieve
success in STEM.
