> What is a Membrane Keyboard?

A membrane keyboard uses membrane switches. Most keyboards use push button
switches. You press a physical key, which moves a metal contact into another
metal contact, and this causes a circuit to be completed.

A membrane switch is very thin, and takes very little movement and physical
effort to activate. Most microwave ovens use membrane switches. Membrane
keyboards are sometimes preferred by people with upper body mobility
impairments, especially if the individual has difficulties controlling their
movements. Some people slide a finger (or a mouthstick, or toe, or whatever)
along the surface of the membrane keyboard for stability, and then dwell on
the switch to activate it.
