Bill,

The Kurzweill 3000 does work with a discover switch. As for screen readers,
if the switch traps the keyboard, it is unlikely that they are going to
work. Your best bet is to download the demos of various screen readers and
try them.

Also, have you considered screen magnification software for this person?
