I've lived in India and I'm the parent of 3 children adopted from India. My
husband and I eat a lot of curry but we NEVER use curry powder. Admittedly,
buying all the spices used in Indian curry dishes can be an expensive
undertaking, but there are some very simple spice mixtures used in authentic
Indian cooking that are made from only a few spices, some of which you'd
probably have already (e.g. cloves, cinnamon). Why don't you visit the
public library and look for some Indian cookbooks? Look for recipes for
"Garam Masala" (means "mixed spice"). You can make up a batch and keep it in
your fridge forever.
