I was able to reverse osteoporosis without even that! All I did was go gf and add Viactive calcium chews to my yogurt, DHEA, and vit E in the morning and before bed. (I was still nearly bed bound at the time. I could only do very light movement--not even walking usually--for about 3 hours/day.) I went from a DEXA of -3.50 to +1.75 in about 2 years, tho. It took me 4 years to get to the point where I could actually walk enough to go shopping and another year before I was able to exercise on a regular basis without exertional fatigue. My situation was fairly unique in this aspect (unable to do any exercise), I suppose.

Calcium supplements are important. I also take 50,000U vitamin D once a week and also once weekly Fosomax. This is all under supervision of a MD. Some improvement but VERY slow.

I can say that I am living proof that Osteoporosis can be reversed.
I was diagnosed 3 months after my CS diagnosis with Osteoporosis in my
hips
and spine and Osteopenia in my wrists and ankles. I after 2 years of
all
the items you mentioned and a prescription of Fosamax for 1.5 years, my
last
bone scan showed NO OSTEOPOROSIS at all and only Osteopenia in my hips
and
spine. My Ortho was amazed. I am no longer taking the Fosamax but
have
continued to show improvement in my bone scans.

I was told calcium - 1500 mgs a day - probably not enough with green
leafy veggies - you cannot reverse osteo - but you can prevent it from
getting worse. I went to a specialist - it is from not absorbing
calcium

Yes, it can be reversed. I increased my spine by 7% in the last 2
years
and I wasn't very active as I have a back problem.

Are you menopausal or post menopausal? I was 56 and post menopausal.
I
started on Natural Progesterone Cream. If you want more info on this
go
to Dr. John Lee's website: www.johnleemd.com or read his book What Your
Doctor Won't Tell You about Menopause by John Lee, MD. New York: Warner
Books. 1996.

The wild yam cream sold at health food stores is not strong enough and
does no good. He recommends Progest which I used. Now I have it
prescribed for me by my family doctor and it is compounded at a local
pharmacy.

Initially I put bone straight back on, but then my parents died and it
was a very stressful few years and I lost the bone again. My doctor
said that the body uses progesterone to manufacture stress hormones so
it was all going into my stress!

Then in addition, I started taking strontium (not the radioactive
kind!)
at the suggestion of my family doctor and that worked really well.

All the literature I have read also says that just going GF will do a
lot to reverse it, but it may take a year or two for the gut to
recover.
Am attaching info on strontium - hope it helps.

Depends, to some extent on age, degree of severity, your metabolism , etc.

In my own case, at least up to now, I have been able to improve situation slightly, but it was not full blown osteo.

I cannot tolerate the common oral drugs...any of them. Nor is it clear to me that any of them are really any good (though it varies from person to person)..and some of them are downright harmful.

The only other option are "infusion" drugs...and here you want to be careful. Some are drugs that are the same or similar to those given to cancer patients and cause, in some people horrific reactions....with little or no positive outcome. You will need to investigate.

I follow a very tough regimen...based on organic goat yogurt (cannot tolerate cow)-- I eat at least 8 quarts a week. I also eat lots of swiss chard (which can be quite good, blanched and then sauteed with garlic and olive oil, or pureed (like creamed spinach) with goat cheese or feta. If you can tolerate calcium citrate -- no more than 500 -- to 600 at one time...no one can absorb more at a meal. I did this for a long time, but eventually my stomach hurt too much from it and I reverted to food...

I attend a wonderful Better Bones exercise class....here in NYC. I will be happy to send you the exercises by hard mail if you wish. You need a very knowledgeable teacher/trainer..most don't know beans about osteo, and think that just piling on weights will do the trick. There are lots of things people with osteo should not do...alignment and p;positioning during the exercises are key...and certain moves could promote micro fractures. I also swim and do aerobic exercise.

Hope you have better luck. Miacalcin did nothing for me. As far as diet, I'm doing the same except for the digestive enzyme, but I've never had a problem digesting. Good luck.

I've been expressing CD since 1995 (age 49). I've been taking Caltrate
for
years, mainly because I don't like milk.
Now I don't tolerate milk or most dairy products, plus, for various
reasons
I'm not an active person, and I still take Caltrate 600 Plus for the
minerals. I had a DEXA Scan last year, and I have very healthy bones.
It works for me.

I have a grim wonder - do food intolerance cause osteoarthritis?

I had a bad knee injury 20 years ago, I had to have my ACL and MCL
repaired. the doctor said now my knee has osteoarthritis. It may just
be a result of the surgery, he said the surgery is very traumatic for
my
knee -

but I also know that my knee was a lot less painful after I found my
food
intolerances - it probably made my knee less inflamed. And I do wonder
if
all those years living with undiagnosed food intolerances - I probably
have celiac disease but I'm not totally sure - had something to do with
developing arthritis.

I've been reading things about how researchers now think immune
reactions
may contribute to osteoarthritis - they don't understand it very well
but
immune reactions can degenerate cartilage.

real bummer - I'm going to see if I have a reaction to glucosamine or
chondroitin. I probably do because the glucosamine is made from
shellfish
and the chondroitin from cows. rebuild those joints! I'm only 46 for
chrissakes.

I was told I have osteopenia..The beginnings of Osteo..I was
just as surprised. I workout everyday and thought for sure I would be
the last one to have it. I am upping my Calcium and returning for a
scan next year same time.

Osteoporosis is a disease that breaks down the tissue in our bones and
makes them fragile and more likely to break.
Osteopenia is not a disease but a term that describes low bone density.
I plan to continue my calcium and buy it at Whole Foods. Must be
difficult when you have trouble digesting it. I hope you do find one
that agrees with you

I believe diet and exercise can reverse osteo. A gluten-free diet won't
be enough and it
does take time on the SCD to do so, however. You might want to research
calcium &
magnesium intake. www.mercola.com will have some great thoughts on
reversing osteo. Also
check out my new website at www.austinscdfriends.com to learn how to
make the SCD as
healthy and balanced as possible

Are you a big soda drinker? There are some theories that the
Phosphoric
Acid in soda contributes to osteoporsis.

I too have osteoporosis and although I watch my diet and exercise, it has been getting worse. I was taking Fasomax, but with celiac, I was advised that we should not take that kind of drug (going through the intestine to be absorbed), plus I had a choking reaction. Then I was on Evista until I found out that it causes blood clots, stroke and fatal heart failure. Now my doctor is recommending I take Forteo injections (quite expensive) but it's a daily shot that has to be kept refrigerated. This just isn't in my lifestyle.
I'm at a loss because the osteo keeps getting worse so the Fasomax and Evista didn't work.
I understand there is a new drug that is up for FDA approval which is being used for bone cancer patients with excellent results. However, it needs FDA approval for osteo in order for the insurance companies to help with payment. It'll be a once-a-year shot, which sounds better to me. And of course a shot does not go through the liver and intestines, which is our worst enemy.
So my life is now to keep watching for this new drug and hoping that with diet and exercise, I will not regress too far.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 29. For the next 7 years
I
supplemented like crazy, took Fosamax then Actonel, and cut out sugar
and
carbonated drinks from my diet. Two scans during that time showed the
osteoporosis only getting worse.

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease in January 2006. After only six
months
being gluten free my dexascan last month showed that my osteoporosis
appears
to be reversing itself already. My spine is barely out of osteopenia
range,
and my hips are SO close to being out of the red (osteoporosis) and
almost
into osteopenia.

In summary, in addition to being gluten free, I still supplement (I'm a
Youngevity fan), eat well, avoid sugar, caffeine, and carbonated
drinks.

I don't know if I am typical or not, but after I was diagnosed with Celiac, I had a dexa and it showed a 23% bone loss. I had known I had ostiopenia (?). My doctor put me on Miacalcin nose spray. One year later after being on a gluten free diet and the nose spray, I had a follow up dexa on the same machine. I had only a 3% loss!!!! This was such a surprise to me. Now, after 10 years on a gf diet and continuing with the Miacalcin I just had another dexa and I am in the normal range. Hooray.

I do take vitamins and calcium daily. B12, E, C, folic acid, citrucal, fish oil,. I have done this on my own. My doctor never recommended I take anything other than Citrucal.

I'm a 71 year old woman who has been diagnosed with CD for the
past 6 years and with osteoporosis and taking fosamax until this
summer. I had a repeat bone density done in May which showed that I
now
have Osteopenia which is an improvement. I'm not suggesting fosamax as
a way to cure osteoporosis, that's just the drug given me which I
followed until this summer. I'm now only on calcium and buy the best
one
that I can even though expensive

Be sure to get your vitamin D level checked - 15(OH)D or 25 hydroxy vitamin D.

The optimal level is higher than the current "normal" level http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=16825677&query_hl=32&itool=pubmed_docsum

You can read more about vitamin D here http://jccglutenfree.googlepages.com/vitamind it is part of The Gluten File
