Distention of teh abdomen was classically described with celiac disease. However, that was due to severe protein malnutrition. It was the abdominal distention seen in Kwashiorkor, which is protein malnutrition. That was back in the old days. Such severe malnutrition is rare today. Patients with Celiac often have coexistent irritable bowel syndrome which is associated with intermittent abdominal distention. There is also simple obesity as a cause of abdominal distention.
